Running

The first thing to review is how to best run. Most runners with previous running shoes are heel strikers. With Five Fingers, you will need to focus on fore foot striking. In order to do this correctly, learn forward, have the center of your mass infront of you, make shorter strides and kick back.

Take a look at my video to get an idea:

I practiced running and mentally challenged myself to "take it easy" before I ran my usual multimile run. Your body is adjusting to its "natural" form and you will need time to do this and break the previous running form. Give yourself at least two weeks of practice time. I am taking it slow, for example, I am a five mile runner and started out at 1.5 miles and walked the rest of the way. I gradually worked my up 2, 2.5, 3, etc. Remember use your body as a gauge to know

Running forefoot vs heel striking. The difference is where you strike the ground when running. In barefoot running, the idea is that you are running and landing on your fore foot with minimal heel striking. Basic running has a traditional heel, mid and fore foot strike. Which is better? Most research has suggested that fore foot strike is much better than heel striking. The best description of a heel strike is putting the breaks on your run and will eventually send your body to the couch. Whereas, a fore foot run is a natural and healthy form and will actually make you run faster.

From Vibram's website, it is quoted that:

In your typical running shoe the heel is higher than the forefoot. In FiveFingers both the heel and forefoot lie on the same plane, so there is no cushioned heel. If you are a traditional heavy heel-strike runner or walker, you might have a biomechanical change to make, but this change is likely a good one. Humans are not meant to heel strike heavily, particularly when running. Try running without shoes on; you will see what we mean. Running barefoot with a strong heel strike will send you to the sofa while your bone contusion or fracture heals. One of the goals of Vibram FiveFingers footwear is to encourage forefoot striking, meaning your forefoot will contact the ground first, then engage muscles in your feet and lower legs as your heel touches down. This style of running and walking is safer, may lead to fewer injuries, and is biomechanically more sound from an energy and force distribution standpoint. Basically, it is a smarter way to ambulate.

*as I mentioned, it takes time for your feet to adjust, you may consider switching between your Five Fingers and your running shoe until you get used to it. You can adjust by walking in your FiveFingers daily and work your way up.

Aerobics

I used this example for my Taebo practice which I have done for over 10 years now. It is a high impact aerobic workout which equates to your aerobic classes, step, power anything. I found that I was able to focus more on my class and targeted moves. Since my foot was light, I was able to kick higher, hold my leg up and have a larger range of movement.

Yoga

Yoga is a genuine practice for the alignment of mind, body and soul. Using my five fingers was cool but I found it not necessary for most of my moves. For warrior pose, my five fingers were really helpful because I was able to get my stance with support.

Walking

The longest I have worn my Five Fingers was five hours which was during my first week. It was really nice because I was "light" on my feet with a tremendous amount of energy. I was able to do all my errands, in and out of my car, and felt so rejuvenated at the end of my day. Walking around my community, I did get a lot of stares and questions about what I am wearing. To get your answers, here are the FAQ's

Everyday. If I could wear them to work, I would! If you could wear them to work and your work requires a lot of standing, walking, moving, these are the ones for you!!!
